MOSCOW - THE CAPITAL OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

Moscow is a city of federal significance, a subject of the Russian Federation and the capital of the Russian Federation.

Moscow has its own territory, population, central public authorities and local governmental bodies as well as its own legislative system, city emblem, flag and anthem.

Geographical coordinates - 55°45 of northern latitude and 3737 of eastern longitude from the Greenwich meridian.
Total city area - 1081.00 sq. km.
Population of Moscow - 10,443,000

TERRITORIAL DIVISION OF THE CITY

The system of the territorial division of Moscow includes 10 Administrative Districts, 123 local boards, having names and boarders approved by laws of Moscow.

LEGISLATIVE (REPRESENTATIVE) AUTHORITY

The Moscow City Duma, the supreme and sole permanent legislative (representative) official body of Moscow, was formed in 1993. The competence of the Moscow City Duma is determined by the Moscow city Statute. The Duma Order controls the way of the Duma's execution of its functions, rules and working procedures.

The Moscow City Duma consists of 35 deputies, who work on a permanent basis. They are elected on the basis of universal, equal and direct voting by secret ballot of citizens for 4 years. A citizen of the Russian Federation, aged 21 by the polling day and having the right to vote, can be elected as a deputy of the Moscow City Duma.

The Moscow City Duma approved the following commissions of the Duma: on security, on budget and finances, on municipal services and housing policies, on state development and local administration, on veteran affairs, on legislation, on health care, on personnel issues inside the Moscow City Duma competence, on culture and mass communications, on science and education, on organization of the work of the Duma, on long-range development and town-planning, on economic policy and entrepreneurship, on the Order, regulations and procedures, on social policy and labor relations, on ecological policy, on international and inter-faith relations, on physical culture and youth affairs.

Deputies of the 2005-2009 convocation form three fractions: "United Russia", "Communistic party of the Russian Federation", "Yabloko - United democrats".
The Moscow City Duma executes its powers during open sessions. Closed sessions are held by the Duma in cases, provided by the Order.

Representing the interests of their voters, the deputies of the Moscow City Duma undertake measures, provided by the legislation to guarantee their rights, liberties and interests. The deputies receive citizens, study the public opinion, and, if necessary, co-operate with executive authority bodies of Moscow and inform voters on their activities. The Moscow City Duma in its activities obeys the principles of democracy, law and openness.

EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY

The system of executive authority includes: the Mayor of Moscow, the Moscow City Government, branch, functional and territorial bodies of executive authority.
The supreme official in Moscow is the Mayor of Moscow, empowered for 4 years according to the federal legislation and the Moscow City Statute.
The Moscow Government is the supreme permanent collective official executive body. It is headed and formed by the Moscow City Mayor.

JUDICIAL AUTHORITY

The Moscow Directorate of the Judicial Department works in the capital. It is the body of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. It provides functioning of local courts, garrison military tribunals, and bodies of Moscow judicial community, as well as the financing of justices of the peace.
The Moscow judicial system consists of federal courts and justices of the peace of Moscow as a subject of the Russian Federation and also of the Statutory court.

Moscow maintains contacts with 154 foreign cities and regions in 97 countries. About 60 countries are our steady partners. We develop long-term relations within agreements and programs, regulating our interaction. The most active cooperation in economic, cultural and social spheres is realized with the following foreign cities: Berlin, Dusseldorf, Athens, London, Peking, Brussels, Vienna, Seoul, Hanoi, Sofia, Ulan Bator, Zagreb, Paris, Chicago, Rome, the Federal land of Bavaria; CIS and Baltic cities: Astana, Riga, Kiev, Donetsk, Erevan, also Republic of Azerbaijan, Kirghizia, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, North-Kazakhstan region and other.
Moscow takes an active part in the work of some international organizations: "Worldwide town and local authorities organization", "Conference of the Mayors of the world’s cities", "European mayor four", "Parliament Assembly of the Black Sea economic cooperation organization" (PABSECO), "Congress of the local and regional authorities of Europe", "International assembly of the capitals and CIS large cities" (MAG), "European association of education centre cities", "European cities against drugs", "Central and Eastern European capital organization on prevention and liquidation of catastrophes and natural disaster consequences" and other.
The Moscow Government keeps rendering overall assistance to countrymen abroad. In cooperation with subdivisions of the Moscow Government they are supported by the Moscow House of Countrymen, Yuri Dolgoruky funds, "Moscow-Crimea", "Cooperation", "Moscow-Sevastopol", International council of Russian compatriots, International association of Russian countrymen youth organizations.
There are 137  embassies, 31  trade delegations, 12 representations of international organizations accredited in Moscow, and the Moscow Government subdivisions maintain working relations with them.
In 2006 Moscow had trade relations with 193 countries. The Moscow Government supports continuous relations with trade representatives of more than 50 countries.
In 2006 Moscow economics gained investments from 121 capital-exporting countries. The leaders in this activity are Cyprus, Luxemburg, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Virgin Islands. Investments from these 5 countries account for 19,2 bln. doll., i.e. 80 per cent of the total foreign investment volume.
At the end of 2006 the share of Moscow came to 47 per cent of the total amount of foreign investments into Russian economics.
According to 2006 overall results the total amount of Moscow foreign investments increased 8 times and run up to 8,3 bln. doll.
There are about 550 international exhibitions and trade fairs realized in Moscow.
4.0 mln. guests visited Moscow in 2006, including 1.5 mln. of foreign citizens.

SIGNIFICANT DATES AND GREAT NAMES OF HISTORY

1147 - The first mention of Moscow in the Historical Chronicles made. It was founded by Russian prince Yuri Dolgoruky.
1328 - Moscow became the capital city of the Great Moscow Principality and of all Russian lands.
1564 - Ivan Feodorov printed the first book in Moscow.
1612 - The militia under the command of Minin and Pozharsky liberated Moscow from Polish invaders.
1672 - Peter I, All-Russian Emperor, was born in the village of Kolomenskoe.
1686 - The Slavonic-Greek-Latin Academy was founded in Moscow.
1709 - 1711 – The years of the first Moscow Governor-General work. This post was held by T.N. Streshnev.
1713 - Under the reign of Peter I the capital of Russia was transferred from Moscow to Petersburg.
1755 - The first Russian university, called Moscow University, was founded.
1799 - The great Russian writer and poet A.S. Pushkin was born in Moscow, in Nemetzkaya Street (now Baumanskaya).
1812 - The Patriotic War against Napoleon. Big fire in Moscow.
1814 - The great Russian writer and poet M.Yu. Ler-montov was born in Moscow, in Kalanchevskaya Street.
1872 - The first horse-drawn tramline (konka) along Tverskaya Street was put into service.
1883 - Consecration of the Temple of Christ the Saviour.
1892 - Tretiakov brothers granted their picture gallery to Moscow. In 1897 P.M. Tretiakov was given the title of the Honourary Citizen of Moscow.
1905 - The first Russian revolution. The armed uprising of working people in the region of Krasnaya Presnya in December.
1917 - On March, 2 the first head of the City Administration, Commissioner of the Temporary Government for Moscow M.V. Chelnokov was appointed.
1918 - On March, 12 the city of Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Russia.
1924 - First buses appeared in Moscow.
1933 - First trolleybuses were put in operation.
1935 - The first line of Moscow Metro was opened and put into operation.
1939 - The start of regular TV transmissions.
1941 - The crushing defeat of German forces in the battle of Moscow.
1945 - The Parade of Victory in the Great Patriotic War in the Red Square.
1947 - The celebration of the 800th anniversary of the foundation of Moscow.
1957 - The VI World Youth Festival in Moscow.
1965 - Moscow had been conferred an honourary title «The Hero-Town».
1980 - The XXII Olympic Games in Moscow.
1991 - The First Mayor of Moscow G.Ch. Popov was elected by direct and secret voting.
1995 - August, 7 - the ceremony of laying the foundation-stone of the restored Temple of Christ the Saviour.
1995 - The restoration of the title «The Honourary Citizen of Moscow».
1995 - The city symbols were affirmed - Emblem, Flag and Anthem of Moscow.
1995 - The Memorial Complex opening in honour of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War on Poklonnaya hill.
1997 - The V Conference of the Mayors of Major Cities of the World in Moscow.
1997 - The celebration of the 850th anniversary of the foundation of Moscow.
1998 - The I Youth Olympic Games in Moscow.
1999 - The Celebration of the 200th anniversary of the great Russian poet and writer A.S. Pushkin.
2000 - August,  19 - the official consecration of the restored Temple of Christ the Saviour. Nowadays it is a cathedral.
